The St. Zelie Scarf

The St. Zelie Scarf

$40.00

Delicate Alencon lace overlays a warm, rich violet in this design inspired by Saint Zelie Martin, the mother of St. Therese of Lieseux.

St. Zelie was an accomplished lace maker who specialized in this specific type of lace. In the design it interweaves with a pocket watch and chain as a sign of her and her husband's communal love, as St. Louis surrendered his watch business to support her in her own work.

The violet coloring for the scarf reflects their penitential life of sacrifice and surrender.

The roses in the lace call to mind St. Therese's future promise to send down from heaven "a shower of roses" and to be called the Little Flower.

The family names of Martin and St. Zelie's maiden name of Guerin adorn the pocket watch face, which is set at 9:30.  This symbolizes the 9 children they welcomed into the world.  The half past 9 symbolizes that 4 of their children and St. Zelie passed away young, and their family was half on this side of eternity and half on the other for much of St. Therese's life.
